Southampton and South West Hampshire Health Authority

Southampton and South West Hampshire Health Authority aims to provide better health care for local people by planning and ensuring the delivery of high quality health services.

We are responsible for making sure that you have access to a wide range of health care including family doctors, dentists, pharmacists, opticians, hospital and community health services.

The Health Authority works very closely with other local NHS organisations, local authorities, the Community Health Council, voluntary organisations, patient and community groups to make sure the Health Improvement Programme properly reflects the health needs of Southampton and South West Hampshire.

The government allocated a budget of £407million to the Health Authority in 2001/2002 and most of this the local Primary Care Groups (PCGs) and Primary Care Trusts.

PCGs/PCTs commission most health services for local residents from the main providers of healthcare in the area and the Health Authority is responsible for commissioning specialist services.
